Activity Details:

The Essential Art of Listening: Developing an ear (listening) is fundamental to being a musician.  In this workshop, students will learn about the importance of listening and developing an ear for music. They will explore both technical and intuitive elements in the process of ear training. They will foster understanding for pitch, tone, and rhythm; we will also discuss the importance of creating a personal collection of music.

Songwriting Workshop: Students will learn about song structure, composition, and lyric writing. One of the activities involves writing a song using sensory detail. This method of writing is often used to create ideas by accessing memories.. Recalling a memory through the senses can inspire writing concepts and ideas.

Ensemble Workshop/Jam Sessions: The main objective of music camp is to create and learn music in an ensemble/band setting. Students will be working with their bandmates in a collaborative setting. Collectively, the students will create a band name and a repertoire (set list) of songs they will learn and perform together. Students will garner the abilities to create and promote their own band projects and performances.

Individual Sessions: Each student will have time each day to work with a music instructor to get individualized support on their preferred instrument(s) and repertoire pieces. During that time, the other aspiring musicians will be working in the ensemble workshop.

Outdoor Activities: Each day we will engage in a midday outdoor activity. Accessing inspiration through nature increases both natural and musical intelligence; as a practice this is valuable for writing lyrics, poetry, and melodies. Hiking, playing, breathing, and movement will promote mental clarity and make room for thought and creativity.
